Old School RuneScape

What Lies Below OSRS:

“What Lies Below” is a mission in OSRS (Old School RuneScape) that focuses on the Dagon’hai, a group of influential Zamorakian sorcerers. Throughout the mission, you collaborate with the Varrock Palace Secret Guard to apprehend Surok Magis.

Walkthrough:

Rat Burgiss:

To initiate the quest, speak with Rat Burgiss at the crossroads between Varrock and Lumbridge. He informs you that his trading cart has been raided by a group of outlaws who stole five papers from him. He requests your assistance in retrieving them and hands you an empty folder to store them.

The outlaws can be found between Edgeville and the Grand Exchange. You may use a Skills necklace or Ring of Wealth to teleport to them. Once you arrive at their camp, defeat five outlaws (level 32) and retrieve five of Rat’s papers. Combine them with the folder to create a full folder.

Return to Rat with the full folder, and he will ask you to deliver a letter to Surok Magis in the Varrock Palace library.

Make your way to the library, located on the north side of the ground floor of the castle, and speak with Surok Magis. He will destroy the letter and reveal that he can transform clay into gold bars, but requires two items: an ordinary bowl and an infused wand. He provides you with Sin’keth’s diary and a wand that needs to be infused with chaos.

Note: To gain kudos from the Varrock museum, obtain the book “Dagon’hai History” from one of the two easternmost bookcases. After the quest, give the book to Historian Minas on the 1st floor of the museum.

Chaos Altar:

Proceed to the Chaos Altar, ensuring that you have 15 chaos runes in your inventory. Accessing the altar requires either a chaos talisman or tiara, or passage through the Abyss. There are four possible routes to reach the altar.

Option 1:

By choosing this alternative, you can avoid the Wilderness completely. Begin by reading Sin’keth’s diary, then head east of Varrock. Proceed southwest of the Lumberyard and west of the Earth Altar until you come across a statue of Saradomin. Speak with Anna Jones, who will provide you with a bronze pickaxe. Use the pickaxe to excavate the statue and reveal the entrance to the Tunnel of Chaos.

Enter the tunnel, and you will discover the Dagon’hai organization residing there. Head north until you reach a portal that leads to the second level of the Chaos Maze. Descend the ladder to access the Chaos Altar.

Option 2:

Travel through the Wilderness (level 10). Head to the OSRS Chaos Altar entrance. Once inside, make your way through the maze to the Chaos Altar.

Option 3:

If you have completed the “Enter the Abyss” miniquest in OSRS, use the Abyss as a means of transportation to the Chaos Altar. Teleport to the Abyss by speaking with the Mage of Zamorak located north of Edgeville. Your prayer points will be depleted, and you will receive a “skull,” indicating you are in danger of being attacked by other players.

Navigate through the Abyssal walkers (level 81) and reach the inner circle. From there, teleport to the Chaos Altar.

Option 4:

By selecting this option, you can bypass the Wilderness altogether. To reach the OSRS Chaos Altar, enter the Guardian of Chaos located at the Temple of the Eye, which necessitates completing the Temple of the Eye quest.

You can achieve this by playing Guardians of the Rift and waiting for the Guardian of Chaos to become active, or by using a Portal Talisman (Chaos) to gain early entry to the Chaos Altar. This will transport you near the altar. To exit, return through the portal and cross the barrier at the entrance to Guardians of the Rift.

Wand:

Once you arrive at the OSRS Chaos Altar, utilize your wand on the altar to absorb the 15 chaos runes, transforming the wand into the Infused wand. Afterwards, make your way back to Varrock’s library and speak with Surok Magis, bringing the infused wand and an empty bowl. Surok Magis will then provide you with Surok’s letter for Rat Burgiss.

Important note: If you show King Roald Surok’s letter before giving it to Rat Burgiss, you will discover the impressive abilities of his guards.

Ending:

Return to Rat Burgiss and deliver Surok’s letter to him. Rat Burgiss will then reveal that he is the commander of the Varrock Palace Secret Guard and that Surok Magis plans to take over the Kingdom of Misthalin by using a mind-control spell on King Roald, and that you inadvertently helped him. Rat Burgiss will refer you to Zaff, the owner of the staff shop in Varrock, to prepare a counteractive spell against Surok’s.

Speak with Zaff, who will explain his plan and provide you with a beacon ring and instructions on how to apprehend Surok Magis. You don’t need to wear the ring. Prepare for battle and locate Surok Magis, who will be garbed in Dagon’hai robes. When you converse with him, he will cast his mind-control spell on King Roald (level 47), whom you must fight. Once the king’s health is low, your character will suggest summoning Zaff by saying, “Now would be a good time to summon Zaff!”.

Use the Beacon ring to call Zaff, who will show up and rescue King Roald by teleporting him away. He will then place a permanent seal on Surok Magis and cast another spell, plunging the library into darkness. When the light returns, the evidence of the battle will have been erased, and Zaff will have vanished. After this, you can buy battlestaves from Zaff’s Superior Staffs and discounted battlestaves from the Varrock Diary.
